Steve Burgess : Bb Trumpet / Piccolo Trumpet / Eb Cornet / Bb Cornet / FlugelHorn
Steve started playing trumpet at the age of 11 under the tutorship of Peter Condon. About a year after entering Park High school in Stanmore he was invited to join the schools brass band by the brass teacher Harry White, and very quickly progressed on to Soprano cornet.
Just prior to leaving school he was invited by Harry to Join Grimsdyke Brass Band which had been formed some years earlier. Steve was to remain there for the next 17 years on soprano before moving to Feltham and changing bands to Yiewsley and West Drayton Band, where he remained for the next 4 years.
On leaving Yiewsley in June 2007 he returned to Grimsdyke on Eb Tuba of all instruments and co-founded Freedom brass. During this time he regularly depped with Denham Hendon Band and in 2008 on switching back to Bb Cornet he left Grimsdyke to Join Denham on Principle Cornet. In 2011 he moved to Alder Valley Band going back to plying his trade on Soprano Cornet.
Rob Thrower : French Horn
Rob started playing the French Horn at the age of 9 under the direction of Lynne Roberts. By 16 he was playing in the Norfolk County Youth Orchestra and fitting in a few freelancing jobs in around school. Whilst studying Music and Maths at Royal Holloway University of London, Rob studied the French Horn at the Royal College of Music under Julian Baker. During this time he experienced playing in many types of ensemble as well as playing in some of the big concert venues in London. It was during his time at College that Rob jointly founded The Brass Monkey Quintet ). Rob is also currently Principal Horn of the Guildford Symphony Orchestra and performs regularly in and around Guildford. On the odd occasion he has also played tenor horn and percussion in Staines and Egham Brass bands. Outside of music Rob is an accountant at Royal Holloway and enjoys playing hockey at the weekend for Thames Valley Hockey Club.
Kenny Ralston : Tuba
Kenny started playing Eb Tuba at the age of 9 under Gordon Evans MBE and spent his early years playing with Campbeltown Brass, and the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland. Whilst studying at APU Cambridge he was principle Tuba for Cambridge University Brass Band, and played for a number of ensembles and orchestras in and around the Cambridge area.
Kenny has also competed as a soloist both regionally and nationally, spent a semester at Lebanon Valley College in the USA where he was tutored by Jim Erdman II and played in many of the college enembles. During his playing years he has been privileged to have played alongside and been tutored by some of the best in the business such as , Richard Evans, Frank Renton, Russell Gray, Sandy Smith, Bruce Fraser to name a few.
After a break from playing whilst he concentrated on his career as a sound recordist he recently returned with Staines Brass and the Freedom Brass Ensemble.
Kenny describes himself as a Freelance Sound Recordist, occasional rower and motorcyclist and fill time Scotsman!
Donna Tubb : Bb Trumpet / Bb cornet / FlugelHorn
Donna started playing at Townfield School at the age of 11 under the tutorship of Bill Rumford and with the Girls Brigade band, progressing to Trumpet/Cornet playing in Hillingdon Music School for a number of years.
Donna has played in Yiewsley and West Drayton Brass band for the last 14 years, and guested with a number of bands in and around the south east.
Currently studying cornet under Charley Brighton, Donna is an accomplished player and has performed a number of recitals at St Mary's church in Slough. In June 2007 Donna moved bands to Grimsdyke Brass Band and Denham Hendon Band, and co-founded Freedom Brass. In 2008 Donna departed Grimsdyke due to moving home and joined the front row at Denham Hendon. In 2011 she made the brave move to take up the Flugelhorn seat at Alder Valley Band a position which she has taken to like a duck to water.
